Question: Dr. Grief, I am a 67 year old woman. I had a papilloma and two hyperplasias, one ductal and one lobular, all removed from the same breast, six months ago. No cancer was found. The breast is still swollen, hard and painful. Is this normal?

Brief Answer: hi and welcome to hcm Detailed Answer: This is not normal 6 moths after removal and this is indicating mastitis or breast abscess but also this is not sign of cancer. You should do basic lab to verify inflammatory changes and if there is inflammation you should start with antibiotics(cephalosporine) and do ulstrasound to verify is there abscess collection which can be drained then. otherwise, you should finish antibiotic course and if symptoms persist, you should do breast mri. Till that, apply alcoholic compresses and take nonsteroid painkillers. Wish you good health. Feel free to ask. Regards
