What Causes Swelling At The Surgical Site After Hip Surgery?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 May 2017
Question: I had a lipoma removed on my hip and then went walking and now it's swollen more then ever. I went to the doctor to see if I had an infection. They took an X-ray and say I have soft tissue standing. What is it ? Will it go away ? What can I do ? How long ? What should I not do ?

Brief Answer:
SEEMS TO BE INFECTION

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your medical history in detail.

Firstly,if appropriately done,a surgically removed lipoma will never recur. There are very less chances that it may form again.

From your history,it seems that the site has been secondarily infected.
Any kind of Xray will not show soft tissue stranding as only bones are well seen on Xrays.

Underlying infection needs to be ruled out. This can be done by an MRI or ultrasound of the part along with aspiration biopsy.

If started on broad spectrum antibiotics,it will go away.If it doesn't,then it may need surgical drainage to drain away the infected material.

It may take approximately 2-4 weeks to heal up completely.

Application of ice packs will help.

Avoid strenous work,do no apply anything hot over the affected area.

Consult a general surgeon.

I hope the answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Kind regards.
