Question: I have recently had systems where the top part of my head near the front when there seems to be a swelling of liquid that really does not hurt but makes me very dizzy. I am in my 60's but still at this late date have some issues with menopause and this swelling appears about once a month during that cycle. My family thinks it might be something else any ideas?

Brief Answer:
You should consult with your GP.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thanks for your query.

The different causes of head swelling may stem from a brain injury or menopause.
During menopause estrogen and progesterone are said to have impact on the body’s water metabolism. The fluctuating hormone levels during not only peri-menopause but menopause can cause fluid retention in your legs, ankles and face. It seems like this may be the cause of swelling.

However if you have episodes of high blood pressure ,it is usually a cause of concern and needs to be addressed by a doctor, as blood vessels in the brain may be contributing to a lack of blood flow.

Most localised head swelling symptoms are caused by injury, and proper medical attention should be taken immediately to avoid serious and permanent damage.
You should consult with a doctor because diagnose may be determine by inspection of swollen area and other examination.

I appreciate your answer now considering the fact that I only have this swelling during the menstral cycle and only then do you think is it more likely that not that could be the cause. Because it appears that if my diet includes more salt and sodium it gets worse but when I have less salt and less sodium it is still there but not quite so bad. I will have it checked out of course, but would like any further advise would be great. I have never had any injuries to the head or any head trauma.

Brief Answer:
Head swelling is from menopause.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Sorry for the delay answer.
If your check up was normal and you havent had any injuries or any head trauma, head swelling is not related with neurological or organic problem.

You said that 'when I have less salt and less sodium it is still there but not quite so bad"-this reinforces the idea that facial swelling comes from menopause.

Here I give you 5 suggestions to help reduce water retention during menopause:
1. Reduce the use of sodium in your diet.
2. You can take vitamin B supplements or incorporate it into your diet by consuming such foods such as meat, eggs, chicken or fish.
3. Drink plenty of water. Distilled water works best. This might sound confusing, but drinking lots of water can actually help to reduce water retention.
4. Regular exercise is also advised at a minimum of 30 minutes per day. This is best and for your heart.
5. Rest.

Take care
