Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: My wife had three stents implanted in her right leg four weeks ago. She has experienced considerable swelling in the leg since the outpatient surgery. She visited with surgeons PA two weeks after surgery. She appeared unconcerned about the swelling. Swelling has not shrunk since visit. Wife is scheduled to meet with PA and surgeon on Wednesday, August 26. Patient is not suffering any pain in leg. Is this normal?

Brief Answer:
no worries, check for pain, change in color and fever, if present, see Dr

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

I understand how disturbing how this could be. However, it is a normal reaction after such a surgery. Within six weeks, a considerable reduction should normally occur with the limb size.

It is important to note if the color of the skin around the limb or uncovered areas is changing, if the limb becomes painful or if she develops fever. If she does not develop any of these, you should not be worried. I suggest however to continue to encourage her to comply with her doctors recommendations and medications.

Too early to worry. Wishing her the best of health. I should be glad to contribute to her well being in case you got any specific follow up questions. Please, do not hesitate asking.

Thanks and kind regards as I wish her a quick recovery,

Dr Bain
