Question : I have not viewed this screen since I was given a response over a month ago. Certainly am interested in getting help for what is increasingly becoming a concern. I am wondering if it is going to be too late to get help. Most physicians I have seen are either not aware of or not familiar with concerns I have brought to their attention. I am likely in need of a specialist and have hopes it is too late to repair what could be a potential deformity to my left knee for lack of proper medical attention. Could you please refer me to an Arthritis specialist?

Correction on my profile information: The Meloxicam is a current prescription that was good from October 15, 2015 to expire October 14 2016. I have only taken 30 out of 90 of the meds prescribed.

DR. Rijhwani. Thank you for your reply. My exact problem is a swelling to the right inner knee area, which has been visible to me since 2009. It looks distracting and would like to know how to resolve the appearance of the swollen knee area. Is the answer to continue monitoring it? Do I wait until something more serious occurs? Is there a cure for this apparent swollen knee other than exercise and weight control as I have been told? My former specialist sent me for a CAT scan that was normal and diagnosed me with arthritis around 2009. Do I revisit for a follow-up or seek another opinion, or do both? I am considering doing both.

There are a few inquiries already included in my profile regarding this health issue, in the event you can review that information, in the event I am not specific enough.

There is a history of arthritis in my family. One of my dad's illnesses was arthritis. He passed away in 1988. However the cause of his death at age 79, was congestive hearth failure. My sister has osteoarthritis. I have been told I have a form of arthritis since 2007 leading up to a recent diagnosis of osteoarthritis. was never prescribed medication until recently. I have been prescribed Meloxicam and have taken 30 out of a prescription of 90 pills. The prescription dates: October 15, 2015 up to October 14, 2016. I have only taken the medicine occasionally since the time given, since it was given to me by a General Practice Physician and not a specialist.

Felt I needed the expertise of a specialist and to be actually examined face to face to help me resolve or control this health issue.

Dear Madam,

Thank you for reverting back.

It seems like your doctor has diagnosed you with osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative kind of arthritis which cannot be reversed because its an age related arthritis. Besides arthritis, there are two possibilities - popliteal cyst or CPPD crystal deposition which can present with swelling in the knee. You should consider visiting a doctor and discuss the possibilities. If needed your GP can refer you to an orthopedic surgeon or rheumatologist.

In the meanwhile, you can continue meloxicam; there is no harm as I see you don't have any comorbidities . Also sometime we give intraarticular cortisone injection to relieve the swelling which will be decided by your treating doctor . Further more you can get an USG knee done to see what exactly is going on as sometimes there can be some loose bodies also giving rise to such swelling.

In this context, I believe you will definitely benefit by visiting a specialist.

Take care.

Thank you for your very resourceful feedback, Dr. Shruti! Since I have gone to my General Practice Physician (GP) with this concern and was prescribed Meloxicam. I decided to go ahead and schedule an appointment with a Rheumatologist, already, for April 7th. Mainly, because over the years I have been told I had Osteopenia, bone thinning from Bone Density tests, arthritis and finally Osteoarthritis. I am sure the GP would agree that I needed to be seen by a specialist. I will present my concerns as you suggested with the Rhematologist. Hopefully, something will be done about the swelling or some treatment for whatever the problem.

Sorry to hear I do likely have a degenerative kind of arthritis which cannot be reversed because it is an age related arthritis. Reading your feedback has helped me recall having being treated by a Chiropractor due to an automobile accident that resulted in a rear end collision from the back of my vehicle. The examiner gave me an x-ray and discussed degenerative arthritis with me then. Also, some form of heat was applied to my body for several weeks. I was given exercise, some healthy eating tips, and encouraged to take vitamins.

Since I was not aware, at the time, there would be swelling included, over time, I did not realize the seriousness of my condition. Nor did I realize I should have pursued continuous help for my condition. I hope it is not too late to get some of my issues resolved. Your feedback has been great to get me started. Thank you so much.
