What Causes Swelling In The Fingers Post Parathyroidectomy?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Oct 2016
Question: The ring finger on my right hand started swelling last night. Now all the fingers are swollen and it feels like it is moving to the palm of my hand. I recently had a parathyroidectomy and have been diagnosed with multiple endocranialplasia. I don't know if this is related but I am concerned about the swelling. It is already to the point that I think I am going to need my ring cut off.

Brief Answer:
see your doctor today

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
This is concerning and you need to get the ring off immediately to avoid permanent damage to your finger. Your doctor will have tools to cut it off. If you cannot get in to see your doctor today, then you need to go to urgent care or emergency.
Many things can cause swelling and it may or may not be related to your Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia diagnosis.
You need a physical exam and blood work done today to find the cause so that it can be corrected.
Your doctor may need to put you on a diuretic to get some of the fluid off but the cause must be found and treated.
If you put your hand in ice water for a few minutes then oil your hand with some kind of oil and try to get the ring off then you are correct it will need to be cut off. Do not keep your hand in ice water longer than 5 minutes.
