Question : One day following hernia surgery I've experienced a grotesque swelling of my penis accompanied by a rank odor of my urine. Is this worthy of my alarm?

It could be due to edema.

Hi
If the incision for Hernia is close to Penis, Edema is seen post operatively.It subsides gradually.I have seen many cases where the Edema subsided in course of time.
Odour of the urine could be due to high concentration . It could be due to inadequate intake of fluids. Please take fluids adequately.
Please continue the current medication.

Thank you. However I would say that the incision is not close to the penis, being 4-5 inched away.

Hi
Even though the incision is 4 to 5 inches away, edema of penis can occur.Nothing to worry as it is temporary.
If it doesn't come down even after 2 weeks, I prescribe Tablet containing Trypsin Chymotrypsin thrice daily before food to my patients with similar complaints.
