Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: My husband had a triple hernia repair surgery. He just got his catheter removed today. His penis and testicles are very swollen. The tip of his penis is actually pushed in from all the swelling. Is this normal? What can he do ?

Brief Answer:
it could be related to the surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

there are various causes of swelling in the scrotum. Since he's had hernia repair this is probably what caused it. Swelling may occur after surgery and may get worse the first few days, even with blue-discoloration of the scrotum. Careful application of ice packs and elevation usually help.

If you've got symptoms (particularly pain and warmth or fever) then you'd better visit your doctor for immediate assessment.

Kind Regards!

Is it normal for the area around the incision to be hard?

Brief Answer:
no...

Detailed Answer:
No, it's not supposed to be hard, but I don't know what you mean when you say hard... The stitches could give a hard sensation. Edema might give a sense of tightness. You'd better ask the surgeon to have a look at it.

Findings that would raise concern include fever, worsening pain, cessation of bowel movements (with distention and inability to expel gas or feces), excessive redness and warmth no the incision area, purulent discharge from the incision.

If any of the above apply to your husband, you should contact the surgeon right away!

Kind Regards!
