What Causes Swelling Of Inside Of Cheeks And Lips?

default
Posted on Sat, 3 May 2014
Question: My symptoms are the inside of my cheeks and lips are swollen and the swelling will not go down. I have had this for a couple of months now. It does not hurt except a little tingling and peppery taste on my tongue at times. I have been to a medical doctor and a dentist and neither one has an answer to what this is or what it is attributed to. Neither one seems to think it is an allergy. I should let you know that this started on one side of my mouth and has been getting worse by going to the other side of my mouth and now my lips. My gums are not swollen nor do they hurt.

Brief Answer: Chronic inflammatory state Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for the query It is indeed very difficult to tell why there could be swelling of the cheeks, the differentials which are coming to my mind now are 1. Chronic inflammatory state 2. Leucoplakia ( unlikely if you are not a smoker) 3. Inflammation of the salivary glands. Here is what you should do 1. Since it has been a couple of month already there is no point treating the symptoms blindly with medications 2. Get yourself a CT of neck and jaw to look for salivary glands 3. Biopsy of the cheeks ( not a painful procedure) should be done at this point to look for abnormalities. It is a gold standard diagnosis for any swelling of the body I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me Regards

How does one treat a chronic inflammatory state? Or to treat inflammation of the salivary glands? And how would I have gotten this in the first place?

Brief Answer: Ageing Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for getting back 1. There is no particular treatment for chronic inflammation. People have tried several things like Multi vitamins especially Vit E, anti oxidant diet, etc however most result are inconclusive 2. Inflammation of the salivary glands depends on the cause of the inflammation, whether it is secondary to infection, stones, etc. Only biopsy can tell us the cause for it. It cant be treated on assumption. Stones are removed under guidance by an ENT specialist 3. Chronic inflammation is part of ageing, it is due to the action of intrinsic inflammatory factors present which undergo changes with age I hope I was of help Regards
