What Causes Swollen Ankles, Itchy Blisters And Brown Discoloration Near Ankles And Feet?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Oct 2017
Question: I have swollen ankles and for over a month now, small itchy blister like bumps that break open and weep, and a dirty brown discoloration around my ankles and feet. My legs get so tired if I have to walk very far, they just seize up. I had an MRI on my spine, it came back normal for someone 70, leg veins and arteries checked and they came back ok. Where do I go now and what could be causing these symptoms. I have gone from being a very active person to someone who has trouble just vacuuming my house without having to stop and rest.

I am an insulin pump diabetic, with 3 calcified heart blockages (all stable for past 20 years.) and some calcification in my abdominal aorta and iliac veins. None of the Doctors I have seen have considered any of these issues relevant to my current health problem. My A1c is under 7, my LDL & HDL are in the normal range, but my lack of activity due to my legs not functioning well has led to a weight gain that I am sure is not helping the problem I am currently having.

Brief Answer:
Cellulitis is a likely possibility

Detailed Answer:
hello. thank you for writing to us.

I am Dr. Kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

Perhaps you have a cellulitis which is a skin and soft tisdue infection. I request you to kindly upload a few images in "Reports section" so that I am able to guide you better.
For cellulitis I would suggest you to take a course of an oral antibiotic e.g either Amoxicillin+ clavulanate (500mg+125mg), thrice daily or Cephalexin 500mg, thrice daily for 7-10 days. Topically you may use an antibiotic cream e.g mupirocin 2% cream or fusidic acid 2% cream, twice daily.
I suggest you to avoid standing or walking for too long as that would worsen swelling. Keep the leg end of your bed elevated when you sleep.

Regards

Thank you, I will follow up with my Doctor about the possibility of cellulitis. My main concern, is the fact my legs just don't work. After a few minutes of walking or doing anything, they start to cramp and seize up. Kind of like your legs would if you tried to climb up the stairs of a 30 story building. That is what it is like. After a certain point, the leg muscles would fail and be unable to function. If I rest about 10 minutes, the legs are able to function again, but each time I have to rest, it takes longer to recover, and they fail faster the next time, till I have to use a rolling walker to get around. After I rest them awhile they are minimally usable again. This has been going on over 4 years now and has gotten to the point where I have trouble just walking to my mailbox at the end of my driveway. When I go shopping, I have to use a motorized cart, or it takes forever to get my shopping done with a regular basket.

I do not have any images nor do I know how to upload them if I did. I am not a computer literate person. This is as good as it gets.

Brief Answer:
I suggest a few investigations. Images would have been an advantage

Detailed Answer:
thank you for information.
Yes, the images would have helped greatly. If you can ask for help...that person may easily upload the images in the "Reports Section".
I suggest a few basic investigations in view of your complaint of out of proportion fatigue/ tiredness in legs - Thyroid Function Test, Hemoglobin and Complete Blood Counts, Thyroid Function Test, Serum Cortisol, Serum calcium, Vitamin D levels, ECHO and ejection fraction.

Could you be more specific when you ask for images??? What is your definition of images?

Brief Answer:
Clnical images of the affected area

Detailed Answer:
hi.

I mean clinical images of the affected area. Images would allow me to judge the severity of the condition and its possible cause and therefore i would be able to guide you accordingly - it could be just cellulitis or it could be an underlying eczema complicated by cellulitis, because you said that there is itching too.

How can you take pictures of legs that get so tired they don't work. I have no pictures of my legs and no Doctor's office has taken any photos. I think we are done here.
