What Causes Swollen Itchy Feet And Tiredness After Alcohol Consumption?

Question: I find when I drink two glasses of wine at night, I end up waking up a few hours later with a strange sensation in my feet. They feel swollen, a bit itchy, and I can feel my pulse like pressure in my legs, feet, and hands. I wake up wide awake, although still tired, and sometimes I am a bit nauseous. My hands feel stiff also. The sensation seems to start in my feet and work up, same with hands and up my arms a bit. The waking up part is very abrupt, and off-putting. I will be sleeping somewhat soundly and then wake up really quickly. I do not necessarily have to urinate at that time. It happens with other alcoholic beverages as well, although I mostly just drink wine. Can you help me figure out what is happening?

Brief Answer: Suspect Flushing syndrome Detailed Answer: Hi.Thanks for giving me an opportunity to address your query. I were to suspect alcohol flushing syndrome based on your history. This is due to the improper break down of alcohol which results in excess amounts of acetaldehyde(a metabolite) which stimulates the histamine release. This results in edema, itching, redness/sense of pressure. I were to do a blood test to check aldehyde dehydogenase enzyme levels to rule out this possibility. Hope this answers your query.
