What Causes Swollen Leg?

default
Posted on Fri, 14 Nov 2014
Question: I don't understand why one leg would swell tremendously more than the other. Is there anything to do? Is it something I should be overly concerned about? Could I have some kind of blockage?

Brief Answer:
Deep vein thrombosis/arthritis/ankle sprain/infect

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

1. One of your legs is tremendously swollen more than the other because of:
- possible deep vein blockage (thrombosis)
- arthritis of the ankle joint (if the edema is localized on the joint only)
- if there is redness of skin, it might be due to inflammation/infection of skin
- if you had a recent trauma, it might be due to ankle sprain.

2. Echo Doppler of leg's blood vessels is advised for further evaluations together with X-ray of ankle joint (if edema is localized in this joint).

Hope it helped! Let me know if I can be of further help!
