Brief Answer:
injury, anatomic variation, tumors

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

an area of swelling on the ribs can be caused by an injury or a tumor or it could be an anatomic variation. If you've had it forever then it's probably just a variation and you shouldn't worry too much about it. If you've had an injury and you've noticed it after the injury then it's the injury.
Otherwise a CT scan will help to exclude tumors.
