Brief Answer:
Need proper evaluation under physician.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Following child birth, tailbone pain may be due to pressure of a baby passing through the birth canal (if baby was big enough), leading to bruise, dislocate or fracture of tailbone (though it is quite uncommon). Narrow pelvis is more vulnerable.

In this case, you need to consult with your physician for clinical examination (both per rectal and per vaginal) and digital X-ray to confirm the diagnosis.

In the mean time, I can recommend following things to be helpful :

1) Use Hot-water bag compression or Ice-cold pack.

2) Take adequate rest as much as possible with proper position.

3) Use pillow or cushion when you have to sit up. Don't sit over hard surface.

4) Pain killer like Ibuprofen or other NSAIDS can be used for short period.

5) A warm sitzbath may provide some relief by relax pelvic floor muscles.

6) Bowel habit should be regular without constipation. Drink more water and eat vegetables for the same.

Hope, it helps for your information. Any further queries are most welcome .

Regards,
Dr S Patra

Is this something that could possibly heal on its own or will it only get worse without treatment?

Brief Answer:
Need physiotherapy and above treatment regimen.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up query.

In most cases, it will heal over the time span with above said basic treatment regimen and physiotherapy. However, I suggest one clinical examination and digital X-ray to identify the underlying cause. It shouldn't be left untreated.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.
