What Causes Tender Spot Above 3 Inches Of Belly Button?

Posted on Sat, 26 Jul 2014
Question: About 3 - 4 inches above my belly button feels tender to touch. If I press on it there is a sharp pain. This pain has happened before and only lasts a few days when it happens. It has been hurting this time for about a day and seems a bit more intense than usual. When I don't touch it I just notice a discomfort more-so than a pain. Could it be related to Acid Reflux? It feels as though the acid is worse today than usual.

Brief Answer:
To rule out Epigastric Hernia & Endoscopy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

Just a few questions to ask before I reply yours::
Is there a swelling in the area where you are feeling pain / tenderness ( pain on palpation or pressure)?
Is there a bulging which increases sometimes and just goes away at other times?
Is this the same area every time you get pain ?

If any of the above findings is there, there is more chance of this being an epigastric hernia with a small neck, causing the obstruction and pain. You should get this confirmed from a General surgeon. Also get an ultrasonography done to confirm the diagnosis about the hernia and other diseases like cholecystitis.

If such finding is not there , I would advise you to undergo an Upper GI Endoscopy to confirm or rule out a gastric ulcer.

It is rare to see such pains with acid reflux as the pain is not easily increased in this area just on touch.

There is no bulge or swelling in the area. The pain is usually only present when I sleep in an odd position or sit for long periods. It lasts for a couple of days then goes away. The pain increases when pressure is applied to the area. It seems to be in the same general area every time.

Brief Answer:
Investigations.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback. Noted that the pain recurs at the same area, and present when you sleep in an odd position or sit for long periods.

You can certainly have a few tests like high resolution ultrasonography for abdomen and abdominal wall. Findings to be confirmed by a CT scan- again of the abdomen and the wall.
Another investigation should be an upper GI endoscopy to rule out the ulcer.
