What Causes Tenderness On The Left Side Of The Face?

default
Posted on Thu, 6 Oct 2016
Question: Hi Dr. Rynne,
In the last 10 days I have jaw pain and tenderness on the left side of my face . When I swallow it hurts under my chin and sometimes radiates toward under my ear. I also have pain in the back of my neck near the base of my skull. I saw a practical nurse who saw fluid in my ears and gave me amoxicillin I am currently taking the dosage. Initially felt better but painful swallowing under my left side chin returned. My lymph nodes do not appear enlarge and do not hurt with touch. I have a deviated septum and a history of sinus problems. My brother in law who is a dentist thought it might be a clog salivary gland. Not sure what to do next.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to viral infection of salivary glands

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in.

As per your symptoms, you might be having viral infection of salivary gland which causes pain on one side while swallowing. You have already got dental check up, so it has no relation with your teeth. You continue with your antibiotics and also take multivitamins for least side effects.

It is advisable to observe this for 1 week and if problem still persists then consult Oral and maxillofacial surgeon or ENT specialist for a detailed clinical examination of that area as well as expert opinion.

Also do warm saline gargles for symptomatic relief three times a day.

Hope I've answered your query, please let me know if your having any further queries.

Wishing you good health

Kind regards
Dr. Neha Sumra
