Brief Answer:
There can be many causes. These are treatable after investigation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The most common reasons for such symptoms are:
a. Esophagitis due to reflux including GERD - Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease.
b. Cervical lymphadenopathy
c. Muscle spasms
d. A sliding (hiatal) hernia
e. Lung or cardiac problems
f. Rarely, impacted food or a foreign body.

2. You should get this investigated. The investigations depend upon how long you have had these symptoms. These tests include a Video-endoscopy, Neck and Chest X-rays, A 2D Echo, Neck and Abdominal USG (Ultrasound).

3. Treatment will be based on these investigations. If cardiac, respiratory causes, foreign body and hiatus hernia are ruled out, treatment will usually commence with an anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory and anti-reflux medication including OTC Mucaine Gel. The rest will require a prescription.

4. Does the pain along the esophagus radiate towards your back?

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
