What Causes The Sensation Of A Tickle In The Throat And Cough?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Jan 2017
Question: I have had a recurring cough for a long time that starts with a tickle in my throat. I have allergies to several grasses and weeds, cats and dogs, and occasionally have asthma symptoms when I catch a cold. I don't want to take cold or cough medicine so frequently but I can't seem to stop this tickle-cough. I had a chest x-ray a month ago because my doctor wanted to be sure there was nothing going on in my lungs. I started allergy shots recently too, hoping I can eventually stop needing allergy meds- Zyrtec and Flonase. Is there anything else I can do to stop this throat tickle and cough? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Cough could be a symptom of asthma.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

As you have said you have allergies and asthma. Allergies can be controlled but it's difficult to be completely cured of them. The tickle in your throat is also a sign of allergy. You may have to continue with your medicines.

Cough in your case could be a symptom of asthma. There is a condition called cough variant asthma where cough is the predominant symptom rather than breathlessness. You should try inhalers like seroflo or symbicort or advair diskus.

Certain preventive measures like avoiding dust and smoke and cold and dry air help. You should do some deep breathing exercises. I hope you are not a smoker and not on any medication for hypertension because certain antihypertensive drugs like enalapril or ramipril can cause cough.

I hope this answers your query. If you have any more questions do post them. I will be glad to be of help.

Thank you Dr. Dangwal. I have a Symbicort inhaler which I've been using only when I noticed asthma symptoms like sore chest and shortness of breath from a cold virus or exercise. I plan to use it daily now especially when the cough is present. Never smoked, not on hypertension meds. My house does get dusty in between cleanings and I do have a cat. Would a clean air machine help?
Thank you very much.

Brief Answer:
Take your inhaler regularly. Can use clean air machine.

Detailed Answer:
Yes you should be regular with your symbicort inhaler as it is more effective if taken on regular basis.

Definitely the clean air machine will be of help. It may not rid the air of dust completely but it will atleast reduce the dust load in the air. So go ahead and use it. But I only hope it does not spray some perfume or room freshener because that may also cause cough in your case.

Take care.

No, Doctor Dangwal, no perfume or air freshener, just a HEPA filter.
Again thanks so much for your advice.
