Question: What is the cause of the stool looking like black sand? Serious stomach pains? Lack of appetite?

I would like to mention. My father has an enlarged heart, and fluid in the right lung. He has a pacemaker and pulmonary catheder which was inserted eight months ago. This information may or may not be relevent. Prior to going to the hospital, he was sleeping alot and again...zero appetitie.

Brief Answer:
Blood in stools

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Stools looking like black sand almost always means that there is blood in stools. It turns black when the blood clots.
Being on a pacemaker means that he will be on aspirin which is known to cause gastric erosion, pain abdomen and blood in stools.

Here is what you should do

1. Tab Omeprazole should be given once daily before food, it will help reduce the pain abdomen. Syrup Sucralfate will also help reduce the pain, 2 tsp should be taken after food twice daily
2. Meet a general physician and get tested for stools for occult blood and also his hemoglobin levels
3. Endoscopy should be done to see for gastric erosion
4. Avoid spicy food, alcohol, caffeine, milk and milk product
5. Avoid smoking.

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

I wish your father good health and a speedy recovery
