Question : Hi Doctor, Please need your advice. I had protected sex with a female escort. I did one rapid blood test after 10 weeks and 5 days i.e 75 days instead of 90 days. It was negative. So I have two questions 1. Is it conclusive 2. I have throat infection since a day and half, is it related to any STD or normal infection. As you see this one is recurring throat infection. Brief Answer: rapid test after 75 days reliable.Safesex noworry Detailed Answer: Hi, Welcome to HCM. Thanks for posting your query. You had protected sex with that escort girl. So you are quite safe with regards to STD/HIV. 1.As far as the HIV Rapid test done after 75 days is almost conclusive. Antibodies are appearing in the body, if there is any HIV infection occurred,after 8-12 weeks. You had done the test after 10 weeks. So it is highly reliable. In very rare occasions the test may be delayed to pick up the antibodies till 12 weeks. 2. You had not mentioned anything about oral sex. As long as you didn't have any unprotected oral sex, your present sore throat has nothing to do with either STD/HIV. It could be due to an ordinary throat infection that anybody can acquire through an air born infection. As you had only protected sex, you don't need any further testing with regards to STD/HIV. Thanks doctor, nope I didn't had unprotected oral sex. We didn't kiss also. Just kissed her body. I am worried as I had recurring throat infection. Previous one throat infection was in 8th week

Just Kissing her body without any oral sex, there is no chance for oral lesion or sore throat due to STD. You had protected sex and your Rapid test after 75 days non reactive, then your symptoms of sore throat were not at all related to HIV. Thanks doctor, your advice helps just wanted to know these symptoms of hiv can occur in first weeks of exposure or later ... I mean today m facing headache ... I guess this is my anxiety ... I don't need any test now right ... I mean I tested on 75th day instead of 90 so .. please advice

Brief Answer: No more test is necessary if You had kissed only. Detailed Answer: Hi, Welcome back. Throat infection can be a manifestation in early HIV in acute infection which could be manifested 4-6 weeks after the possible infection, if any, following exposure and also can occur in late HIV disease also at any time after 5-7 years. But for you it is unlikely to be due to HIV as your rapid HIV test on 75 days came negative and you had only protected sex. If you are sure that you didn't have anything other than just kissing her body, you don't need any more test. Dr S.Murugan

Especially in a developed country like United States the quality of tests would not be questionable. otherwise their administration (FDA) would not allow such testing centers.
