What Causes Throat Irritation?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, I have patchy throat since last two weeks, in the mean time I have shown this to three ENT specialist, and to my horror all three of them are telling me different things.

One of them prescribed some anti allergens, the second one prescribed for tonsilitis and the third one for reflux.

As of now I feel slightly better but the patchiness is still there. I have no symptoms of fever or any body ache nor throat pain or any other thing.

Can you please recommend what needs to be done next. Do you recommend a CT scan to get a clear idea if there is more than these ENT's diagnosis.

Hi dear. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to address your query.

I would be glad to know what exactly you meant by patchy throat-do you have irritation?
Do you have throat irritation especially when you wake up in the morning?Do you have gastric discomfort, belching?Do you have food regularly on time?Have you ever had acidity?

Did the doctor tell you that your tonsils are enlarged?
Do you have nose block, running nose?

Feel free to share the information so that I may help you better.
CT scan need not be done (it will be normal).

Awaiting your reply.

Thanks Doc for reviewing my query. Patchy throat for me is like irritation, something appears to be stuck to the back of my throat. This type of feeling comes to me usually when u get up in the morning then after sometime like 3 to 4 hrs later it appears normal like the irritation is not there then during the night it starts again.
Regarding tonsillitis, I am not sure I I have it because I don't have any throat pain or headache or running nose.
Sometime my food schedule becomes absurd and acidity yeah it's like gas sometimes, apart from this no heart burn or any thing.

Please let me know if you need more information on this. I am asthmatic and I take combimist L inhaler regularly.

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of acidity

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Its very kind of you to share the above information.

According to me it is a clear cut diagnosis of acidity (acid peptic disease). The acid from the stomach reflux into the throat at night time and causes irritation (at morning) which normally subsides within a few hours. Thus your history is classical.

I were to advise to regularize your food habits.
Plenty of oral fluids.Avoid oily and fatty food. Minimize consumption of beverages coffee, tea.
Suggest Tab.Rabprazole 20mg once daily for 4-6 weeks half an hour before breakfast every morning. It is available overthecounter.
Advise to elevate the head end of the cot by 2 inches to avoid reflux and irritation during night.

Hope this answers your query.
