What Causes Tickling Sensation In Throat?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: Hello. For the past few weeks I keep getting a "tickle in my throat". This happens several times a day, about every hour. There is one particular spot in the throat that I can feel and it causes me to cough (dry cough). Sometimes drinking water or something helps, but not always. What could be the cause? I'm not on any medications and haven't changed anything, it just suddenly started happening. It happened a few months ago and lasted quite a while, then ceased to about once or twice a day. Now, it's back to many times a day.

Brief Answer:
could be a few things

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,

A tickle in the throat usually happens during throat infection. It is usually associated with soreness and irritation of the throat.

Post nasal drip can also produce the feeling of tickling in the throat. Post nasal drip occurs in long standing infection of the sinuses or allergies in sinuses.

Tickling can also happen in reflux disease. In reflux disease , stomach contents slowly reflux into the throat and produce a variety of symptoms like burning, cough and irritation.

At this point of time without an opportunity to physically examine throat, I might not be able to pinpoint exact cause. I will suggest you see an ENT specialist to come to the diagnosis. Till then you can follow a few simple measures like-
1) Warm salt water gargling 4 times daily, it helps to soothe the throat and also controls infection.
2) Avoid cold foods and cold drinks.
3) drink plenty of warm fluids.
4) Do steam inhalation 4 times daily , it helps to soothe the throat.
5) Avoid air conditioning.
