Question: Hi my ten year old son is experiencing what he describes as "first i get a tingling feeling, then shortly after I cannot move any part of my body , cannot speak nothing but I am aware of what it is happening " It has happened 3 times in last four days first time was just 2-3 minutes today was almost 20 minutes. He has adhd and celiac disease - we started him on straterra 6 weeks ago 18mg - is this a side effect of the medicine or something totally different - he is currently out of the country with his Dad and we dont know what to do

Brief Answer:
Seizure activity

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

Your son has been having episodes of feeling tingling followed by inability to move. This could be a type of seizure activity and for that I recommend that he seek medical attention as soon as he returns home.

The other possibility is severe anxiety. It sounds more like you son is having severe panic attacks. These attacks maybe exacerbated by the Strattera that he is currently taking. I would recommend that he start weaning from Strattera and see if this reduces these episodes. he would wean by reducing the dose by one capsule daily.

When he gets home I strongly urge that he be seen by his physician and have them get EEG and possibly change his medications

In summary
1. Anxiety attacks
2. reduce Strattera
3. Possible seizures
4. See medical provider for EEG and medication changes

I hope this answers your question. Please contact HCM again with your health care concerns and questions or if you need additional information

Thank u he is only on 1 pill of 18 which is the lowest dose a day - what's the best way to wean him off so I can let my husband know he does have anxiety which we thought the starters would have helped with but it doesn't seem to be happening at times when he would be anxious like it happened when he was out playing soccer with friends and just riding in the back of the car - do u see any point in taking him to hospital there or wait til they get back here on friday

Brief Answer:
Just stop the strattera

Detailed Answer:
With your son just taking 18mg of Strattera he only needs to stop taking the medication. There is no weaning required.

I would wait until he returns home to get him seen. If you have him seen outside of the US he will only have to repeat his tests again when he returns. These seizure like activity is concerning but is not dangerous. I would recommend that he return home though as soon as possible and have him seen soon.
