What Causes Tingling Sensation And Numbness In Lip?

Question: am 79 years old and in good health, I work out every day. I have only one kidney left that is functioning at 33% . But yesterday I noticed my lip tingling and numb like when you go to the Dentist. My name is XXXXXXX XXXXX husband. Oh I had one Kidney removed ( Renal cell carsanoma . cancer in 2004. I have high B/P . All test and blood work came back fine a month ago, except I'm anemic .

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

One possible cause for the lip tingling that you describe might be an allergy. That is especially probable if there is also swelling of the lips, or other possible allergy signs such as itching, hives etc.

Another possible cause is some electrolyte imbalance like changes in the blood levels of calcium or potassium. In your case with low renal function that is a strong possibility. To confirm that though blood tests are necessary.

I do not think it likely to be in the setting of a brain lesion like stroke because in the case the abnormal sensation involves a more wide spread area than only the lip. At times it could be the initial manifestation of a neuropathy like Herpes Zoster, but less likely, anyway if that is the case usually other signs follow like pain and skin eruption.

Of course it may be an issue of anxiety, but that is when other causes have been excluded.
