Posted on Thu, 4 Jun 2015
Question: My mother 69yrs old, got a Seizures stroke on 23/01/2015, hospitalized for 5 days, after recovery, she was under medication, second stroke on 22/02/2015, again hospitalized for 5 days. Now still under medication, Eptoine was stopped due to severe side effects. Now she is taking Szetalo 5mg. For the past week days, her right hand became totally numb and not able to speak clearly. When I contacted the neurophysician, he says its just a mild problem. But her condition is deteriorating day by day. Please advice how to deal further. Is szetalo to be continued or stopped.

Brief Answer:
This might be another stroke. Szetalo is not a medicine for stroke.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

With the clinical background, that your mother had recurrent strokes, she is having high risk for further strokes too.The present complaint of numbness of right hand and unable to speak clearly, probably is another episode of stroke. At this time, she must get an urgent brain imaging like CT Head or Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) of Brain to detect the fresh lesion. Also, please upload the reports of previous CT or MRI scans,so that treatment protocol can be decided.

Szetalo(Escitalopram) is an antidepressant drug and is not a medicine for stroke. So,continuing or stopping this drug will essentially make no difference to the treatment of stroke. However, since depression is frequently accompanied with stroke,so szetalo may be continued.

To conclude, she must be evaluated for a fresh stroke, if any.Depending on the stroke type, whether ischemic or haemorrhagic stroke, treatment must be strictly adhered with.
So,please follow up with all reports and documents,so that medicines can be started after confirming the type of stroke, she had.

Waiting for your follow-up.

Brief Answer:
Seen reports. Please continue medicines.Get back after fresh CT Brain.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up and uploading all documents.

I have gone through your mother's medical documents, doctor's prescription and detailed reports.Clearly, she is a case of recurrent stroke(ischemic) with seizures.Seizures were secondary to stroke, probably. She is in high risk category for future stroke. So,you must urgently get a fresh CT Brain done, considering the present complaints. It may be a fresh stroke.

She need to continue medicines regularly as prescribed.Drugs combination prescribed is fine for his clinical conditions. She must strictly adhere to the drugs.

With regular medicines and physiotherapy, she is likely to have improvement in condition. However, degree of improvement, may vary in different individuals.Probability of complete recovery decreases with age. So,she being of old age,has less chances of complete recovery. We will have to wait and watch, how much she improves.Only time will tell.

Please get back with fresh CT scan of Brain.

Hope that I have answered your query for now.If you have some follow-up questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.

Hello Doctor, today I have taken my mother to Care hospitals vizag in Andhra pradesh. Dr G Kishorebabu, M.D.D.M. Neurology, checked her up, advised me that its not a seizure stoke but partial paralysis. Both right arm and leg got tingling effect. Also he stated that its not because of hypertension but due to depression that she is developing. Medication prescribed:
Ecosprin 75mg
Atorfit
Epilive
Richneuron capsule.

He wanted us to go for review after a week.

Here, my last question is, how better that Richneuron wok for tingling arms n legs so that my mothe recovers.

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

Though,I personally feel it would have been better getting a CT head done. However,as the doc said let's review after a week.Be regular with medicines.

Richneuron may enhance the recovery to some extent.Exact figures on this are not available.
