What Causes Twitching In Bicep Muscle ?

default
Posted on Fri, 14 Nov 2014
Question: I have had a twitching left bicep muscle for over a day now. Wont stop. I used free weights on Sunday and did extra curling reps . Why did this start 24 hours after that, and is it serious? I read about MS, ALS etc that all have this as an early sign? Should I worry??

Brief Answer:
These are benign fasciculations.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms and would like to reassure you that they are not suggestive of any serious disease such as ALS or MS.

They are most probably benign fasciculations and related to free weights. Symptoms may begin 24 hours later.

There is no need to worry, as they would subside with adequate rest to the affected muscle.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Is there anything i can do to treat it? Heat for example or just rest? I wrote this followup question as well. I have had two other events with my left arm. Once a year ago and once a few months ago. I wake up and my left hand is numb and not moving. Just kind of hanging in the air. Thought I had a stroke, but when i sat up and rubbed it within a few minutes it was fine with no after affects. Still scared me. One, is this related to my twitching now? And two, is this a separate concern what I describe?? Should I see a doctor and what do you think this was? It was a big concern. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Rest alone should be enough.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Rest alone should be enough. If you experience pain or if there is muscle spasm, then, heat may be applied.

The previous event seems to be unrelated. The transient weakness could be due to neuropraxia, which occurs because of mechanical pressure on the nerves, while sleeping, etc.

As of now, there is no need to see a doctor. However, if your symptoms do not subside in the next few days, you can meet a neurologist.

Best wishes,
