What Causes Two Protrusions In Belly Button?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Aug 2014
Question: I have two protrusions within my belly button. They look like pimples but seem more like a growth. One is only slightly raised, the other is raised about 2 millimeters. I first noticed them about 2 months ago. At one point about a month ago one started to bleed and my belly button was infected for about a week. I cleaned with saline solution and it cleared up. A few days ago I checked it and cleared a hardened substance about 3 millimeters long from the protrusion. I will attach a few pictures. Could you tell me what it is and how to treat it?

Detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

It looks like you may have persisted urachus. Its a kind of connection between the urinary bladder and belly button (it should disappear after a birth). The main symptom of such condition is bad smelling (like urine) discharge from the belly button. Urinary tract infections can be present.
It may be also just a skin infection due to bacteria presence in this area. Belly button is more moisturized and warm than the other skin areas what makes great environment for bacteria grow.
If the discharge is smelling bad, please consult urologist first and have abdominal ultrasound done.
If the discharge has no specific scent, please consult dermatologist.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
