default
Posted on Thu, 16 Apr 2015
Question: My son seems to have an umbilical hernia he is 11 weeks old now and it doesnt seem to go away...it is more evident when hes full or crying..the doc says we should give it time it will go away....i am just worried if it doesnt...
traditional remedy is to put something flat by the navel like a flat round board and tie it around the babys waist foe 2 weeks so i am just wondering if that isnt dangerous after reading that the intestine could be what is causing the hernia..i am waiting to see a doc in a week .

Brief Answer:
It usually subsided as baby grows

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query
Umbilical hernia in infancy usually does not need any treatment unless it is very large and there is herniation of intestinal content into it.
In infancy due to weakness of abdominal wall hernia is found in around 1 % of cases. If it is not subsiding surgery is indicated at 2 years of age.
The outcome depends on the size and content. As your child has been evaluated by doctors you need not to worry.Keep your child in regular follow up.The traditional managment like compression banding is not scientifically proven

I will be glad to answer if you have any further query.
Regards
