What Causes Unilateral Burning Sensation In The Body?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Mar 2017
Question: I have a sensation (sort of like a mild sunburn) on the left side of my face and continues downward onto my left shoulder, arm and leg. Most noticeable and bothersome at night interfering with sleep. Seems to diminish in day time. I am 82 years old. Have arthritis issues, including lower spinal stenosis affecting hips an legs. I have mobility and do household and home maintenance chores. Above is most prominent on L.face . I have no numbness in legs and within limits of arthritis get around OK. Condition is not present on R side at all. Suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Symptoms could be suggestive of minor stroke.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. Based on this, we need to exclude a diagnosis of minor stroke (due to reduced blood supply to brain). Right side of brain controls the left side of body, and hence a stroke affecting right side of brain (such as in thalamus or parietal cortex) could lead to abnormal sensations on left side of face, arm and leg.

As of now, you can start pregabalin capsules for relief.

A brain scan should be done to confirm or exclude the diagnosis of stroke.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
