What Causes Unpleasant Sensation Under Right Rib While Sitting?

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Oct 2015
Question: I have this sensation of "something" being under my right rib, but no pain. I only feel this when sitting. There's no pain on pressing. My urine is normal, no infection. No fever, no upset stomach. I go every morning, so I dont think it's constipation. It just feels like there's something under my right ribs.

Brief Answer:
Simple intercostal muscular strain

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I have been through your question and understand your concern.

To begin with, there are only two condition which symptoms are manifested with disesthesia(different sensation) of a specific dermatome which you explain with sensation under the rib.

The first one is a subclinical herpes zoster infection, which MUST be associated with vescicles in the skin of the impaired sensation.

The second one is a compression of the thoracic nerve at the level of the vertebras. In this case a plain Xray of the thoracic vertebras is enough to rule out any eventual problem.

BUT, these are very rare, and I think you are just experiencing an intercostal muscular strain ( muscle injury) which is very common, totally benign and resolving in a few days with no treatment. This is explained by you additional feature reporting an increase of this sensation when you are sitting, because an increase of your abdominal pressure ( when sitting) puts your intercostal muscle do the respiration because the diaphragm no longer assist in sitting position.

This is my diagnosis. Hope it helps.

Wish you the best health.
