What Causes Urine With Strong Odor In A Diabetic?

Question : Recently my urine has developed a strong odor. My medications have not changed in over a year. Neither has my diet. I am a male, age 70, type 2 diabetic. Looking for possible cause. Thanks, Don.

Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this strong odor. With no recent changes in medications, it is unlikely that this has been caused by drugs. In most cases, drink urine odor is associated with insufficient fluid intake.

I will recommend you drink at least 2liters of fluid daily on at least 3das continuous and monitor the odor of your urine for changes. If there are no changes, I will recommend a urine test and culture to rule out any possible infections and electrolytes changes.
