What Causes Vaginal Bleeding During 6th Week Of Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Jul 2015
Question: I recently discovered I'm between 6-9 weeks pregnant and have a history of incompetent cervix and preterm delivery. We have moved to a new state and I am not a patient of record with a new OBGYN and no doctor in our area will even let me make an appointment because they sat they want my records first. Last night I started bleeding, having some pretty bad pain, and had a little milky pink tinged discharge. LMP May 16, no clotting, brown/red blood, and I've gone through one maxi pad today. The pain is still there but it's not intense and I took a vicodin leftover from dental work and feel better. I know an early miscarriage can't be stopped, but I wanted to know how long should I wait to have a natural miscarriage and if I were to have a D&C would it further complicate my already incompetent cervix and lessen my chances of successfully trying again, and would there be any point in me going to the er?

Brief Answer:
D&C done gently does not complicate incompetent cervix

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

The range of 6-9 weeks pregnancy is very large. Have you had an ultrasound? What was the report? In early pregnancy ultrasound is very accurate in calculating the pregnancy age. From your LMP you are now 6+ weeks pregnant.

About 20-25% of women have vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy. Half of them continue their pregnancy and deliver normally. Since the pain has reduced now in all probability you will continue with the pregnancy. Consult obstetrician and take progesterone to support pregnancy. Don't think about miscarriage.
If the pain / bleeding increases you need to go to the ER.
If you were to havea D&C, if it is done gently it will not complicate your incompetent cervix. It does not lessen your chances of successfully trying again.
I hope this helps.
If you have further queries, I will be happy to answer.
With best wishes,
Dr Rama

Thank you so much for responding. I haven't had any medical treatment since I found out I was pregnant last Saturday. My period being late just slipped my mind and I thought I just had a stomach bug. Hopefully my new OBGYN will receive my records soon and will finally let me make an appointment. Thanks again and I hope your holiday weekend is safe and enjoyable. ☺
