What Causes Vaginal Bleeding Post Intercourse?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jun 2016
Question: After having sex last night my boyfriend's penis was covered in about 10 little greyish brown clumps, with some darker bits of blood in. Afterwards it was painful and I bled a watery red blood for a short while. What could this be? I am on the contraceptive pill, and will admit to taking in a few hours late a couple of times recently, and had quite recently had a yeast infection that was treated.

Hello XXXXXXX

The bleeding could be from a few reasons:

1. If you were not adequately ready for intercourse, it could have caused some irritation to you that resulted in mild bleeding, and pain for you afterwards.

2. Sometimes the cervix can grow a little polyp (non cancerous) and if this is rubbed up against, it can bleed. Your doctor can see if this is present during a pelvic exam with a speculum, and can usually remove these painlessly in the office.

3. Any type of vaginal infection or inflammation can predispose to bleeding. If there is any chance of STDs, go get checked by your doctor.

4. Sometimes women can bleed a little before their period is due, or shortly after it stops. This usually does not cause pain, though.

5. Very deep thrusting can cause some inflammation and bleeding of the cervix.

It is hard to sort out without an exam, but most post-intercourse bleeding is not anything worrisome. The one thing that makes me concerned here, however, is that you were in pain afterwards. So I think it would be a good idea to go to your doctor for an exam.

I doubt that your taking the Pill a few hours late (especially if it is a standard combined Pill rather than the "Mini Pill") would cause this. Especially, it would not cause pain after sex unless you are quite dry from it.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.
