What Causes Variation In Muscle Mass?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Jan 2015
Question: My sons right is thinner than his left. More so at the elbow and tricep. It's almost as if he's missing a muscle or has poor muscle formation. He's almost 8, extremely strong and uses both arms equally. He's actually a righty. Is there a name for this condition?

Brief Answer:
Normal physiological variation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The slight variation in the muscle mass with a normal muscle strength and tone is a normal physiological variation. If he has no difficulty in using his right arm and the strength of lifting in both the arms is equal then there is nothing to worry.
It is not likely to be due to any syndrome. However you can get an EMG- Electromyography done to confirm the normal activity and response of the muscle fibers. Regular physiotherapy sessions can help the muscle in gaining mass.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you for that great answer. I have one more concern and I'm hoping that you can answer it. If, God forbid, my son should break that right arm anywhere near the bicep or tricep area, do you know of any cases where there was a complication due to the variation in the size?

Also, for your information, he did have a kidney ultrasound performed when he was approximately six months old which showed no abnormalities or variation in size.

Brief Answer:
No such complications.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
In case any such problem happens, there are no extra complications due to the reduced muscle mass. Regular physiotherapy will help in regaining the full strength and tone after any such injury. There is no effect on the process of healing.
Hope my answer is helpful.
