What Causes Visible Veins On Chest In An Obese Person?

Posted on Tue, 8 Dec 2015
Question: HI doc

I am a 25 year old male. A bit overweight just below 14 stone.

On my chest above the abs(wasn't sure about correct wording) I have noticed some prominent veins of late. They are going to the side on both sides.

I have got this checked now from 2 doctors, but I am a natural worrier just wanted one more confirmation that everything is OK.

Why do such superficial veins exist?

The advice I had off 1 doc was everything looks fine he checked my liver and couldn't see anything.

One said it looked fine and everything is normal. If veins got darker come back to us.

The other said no problem get one with normal life.

So I'm taking these as reassurance is this natural in human beings to show veins? I don't want to get out checked further as I'm young and fairly healthy.

I am very light skinned of XXXXXXX origin. Also when I take a photograph yoi can't see them, only in mirror etc.

What are your views is this normal?
HI I did have a few courses of ciprofloxacin within the year as I had prostatis which is now back to normal and a crp test confirmed this.

Brief Answer:
No need to be worried.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Well, its hard to give valuable answer not being able to see it. I assume that we wont be able to see them on picture?
Generally veins on the chest do not indicate any condition or problem. Especially if there is no other symptoms like shortness of breath, night sweats, weight loss. Lack of this symptoms at your age confirms that there is no reason to be worried.
Liver cirrhosis do not cause enlarged chest vein. It can cause abdominal veins and veins in the esophagus, but not on the chest.

Antibiotic intake has also nothing to do with mentioned veins.

And just one more thing. If this veins are symmetrical, same on both sides, this just confirms that you are just build in such way.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Doctor I have attached 5 images when o have updated details. Can you see anything abnormal?

Well how it is after the throat (on the ribcage) there is a vein going to the right with 3 veins visible just by the chest/ shoulder. It's the same on the other side going to the left?

Can it be due to my build? Are there ways to get rid of these such as weight loss etc. Or do you think I get on with normal life?

I have gained some weight recently

Thanks for the reassurance that antibiotics haven't caused this.

So to conclude all is normal anatomy
This vein is starts from top part of chest.. Don't know the anatomy word for that sorry. Please pay attention. To dsc0214 picture the latest I have uploaded.
Please give your expert opinion on pictures also.

Brief Answer:
Just normal veins.

Detailed Answer:
This veins (barely visible) are regular veins. There is not hidden disease causing it. I`m sure about that. This is your normal build. Some people have lighter skin so the veins are more visible. Maybe its because of that you have noticed this veins. But for sure no need to be worried about this.
And no need to do anything with it.
When you loose some weight (you do not seem to be overweight), you will make this veins even more visible as the fatty tissue hides them. So yous liver your life and do not bother about this veins.

Thank you doctor for your reply.

So thr visible veins by the shoulder x3 should not worry about those either?

Final question these have nothing to do with varicose veins are they?

I also have seen something called reticular veins online these are definitely not reticular veins sir? That is my final question as they certainly look like those or no?

Thanks sir
Also are people wired different differently?

I have also been boned all my life do people have bigger. Veins.Just recently noticed them never examined chest before.

Brief Answer:
This are not varicose veins for sure.

Detailed Answer:
This veins are not varricose or reticular veins. No doubt in that. This veins just drain the blood from soft tissues and the skin.
Skinny people or athlets do have much bigger veins.
