What Causes Vomiting During Bowel Movement?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Jul 2014
Question: During a bowel movement, I will suddenly begin to vomit. There is no nausea, and after I am finished, I feel fine, and able to eat again with no ill effects. One physician mentioned something about the vagus nerve, but didn't explain further. A recent colonoscopy showed no problem. Can you help me?
Thank you,

Brief Answer:
Investigations and few medicines.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

You have a specific history.
Sudden vomiting during bowel movement.
No nausea- feel fine- eat again with no ill effects.

Vagus nerve control the forward movement of the contents in the bowel and may have nothing to do with the vomiting if not associated with other symptoms.

There is a condition called syncope where the Vagus is overactive, but you will always get some other symptoms like giddiness, sweating, fainting and uneasiness( which I hope you do not have and hence you have not mentioned)

Colonoscopy per se has nothing to find in this disorder.

The most probable reason I can think of is as follows ::
It is possible that your lower esophageal sphincter is lax and allows the vomit to occur when the intra-abdominal pressure increases during bowel movement.
This ,may also be associated with some trigger in the form of a smell or vision or something in the bathroom that instigates vomiting or may be a regurge, enhanced by the increased pressure in the abdomen.

I would advise the following:
*Upper GI Endoscopy examination
*Ultrasonography of the abdomen.
*Some bowel regulator like Domperidone or metocloprpamide
*Please discuss this with your Doctor in details and start the treatment. Also discuss about the possibility of stress or psychogenic cause and treatment accordingly.
