My 3.5 year old daughter was sick this weekend starting with Vomitting on Saturday morning. She had a temp of 103. We took her to the doctor and they suspected a stomach bug, but she did not have any additional stomach symptoms - only a fever, runny nose for the next few days. This afternoon when we picked her up from school and learned that one of her classmates threw up. Shortly after sitting down to eat dinner, she proceeded to vomit. I believe that there might be something going around her class, but am mainly concerned because now she is wanting to go to sleep (hours before her usual bedtime). Should I be concerned or is it normal for my child to be tired and just wanting to lay around after Vomitting one time? She does not have a fever.
ORS is the mainstay of treatment
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone very carefully through your query. Your daughter indeed seems to be suffering from a gastrointestinal infection. Unless associated with bloody diarrhea, antibiotics are not usually required. But the mainstay of treatment is ORS (oral rehydration solution) and plenty of fluid intake to make up for the salt and water lost. Unless that is done properly, she will become dehydrated and that would be a cause for concern. The tiredness and lethargy are warning signs which are calling for close attention and hydration. If the condition persists, I would insist you to get her blood tested for total count and C-Reactive protein (CRP). If these are elevated, antibiotics would be required.
Give paracetamol or acetaminophen when needed to control the fever.
Let me know if I could help further.
Regards
