Posted on Tue, 11 Apr 2017
Question: I have been vomiting, low fever, creme colored stool. Just returned from vacation. Am taking Eliquis, Omeprazole, Synthroid. Had open heart surgery to remove PFO closure devise on 4/24/16. Shoulder surgeries in Sept. 2016, and Dec. 2016. Nerve pain in right arm from emergency surgery to remove arterial clots on 4/24/16. Nerve pain in leg from subsequent clots. Have been home from vacation for 7 days and sick at stomach since then. I have Cipro from a previous trip to Mexico. Looks like a parasite. ??? Thank you

Brief Answer:
Possible viral gastrointestinal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

From the symptoms you have, seems like a viral gastrointestinal infection that you may have got during your travel.
These are my recommendations:
- Drink plenty of fluids...often but small amounts.
- When your appetite will come back, eat a diet with Banana-apples-toast and rice so you can substitute the components you have lost with the diarrhea.
- Avoid milk because it makes diarrhea worse.
- Take a probiotic so you will be better faster.
- If you notice blood of mucus in the stool, then is the time to take the cipro.
- In general it lasts for up to 7 days. If it lasts more, and if worse but not better, then consider taking the cipro.

If worse or not better, I would recommend seeing a local doctor.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need more clarifications.

Dr. Papaqako

I only had diarrhea for one day, last Wednesday. My back has been killing me as well since Wednesday also, the back pain is keeping me from sleeping and is a major part of my problem right now ( my husband asked the first question for me), it is aching from my mid back through my lower back, does this change your thoughts in any way? I'm trying to decide if I want to go to the emergency room.

I really need to have the full information in order so I can advice accurately something that is helpful to you.

How has the back pain started? Did you do any physical exercise or weightlifting in the previous days before it started?
Do you think it is related with the bones? muscles? internal organs?
How strong is it from 0-10?
What makes it worse and what makes it better? Have you used any painkiller or other medicines? Does movement makes it worse?
Do you have any other symptoms?- shortness of breath? numbness?
Does it stop you from doing daily activities?
Why are you thinking to go to the emergency room?

Looking forward to your follow up question.
