What Causes Watery Eyes In A Child?

default
Posted on Tue, 6 Jun 2017
Question: Hi Doctor,

My daughter is 10 months old. From today morning water is coming from her eyes as if she is crying. I looked at the eyes closely, I couldn’t observe any abnormality. May be in the last 6 hours, 30 drops of water might have come. Except watery eyes there is no other symptom.

What do you suggest us to do?

We are planning to go to Bahubali movie. Can we take our daughter with us? Does the high volume sound cause any problem to the baby? From what age we can take the baby to cinema?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Could be due to nasolacrymal duct blockage

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. It seems that the nasolacrymal ducts of your daughter have got blocked. Through these ducts originating from the inner angle of the eyes and draining inside our nose, the tears escape. In case of blockage all you need to do is to gently massage with the tip of a finger, stroking downward from the inner angle of the eye to the ala of the nose. This has to be done for a few times multiple times a day regularly. The ducts would soon open up and the watering will go away.

You can take your child along when you go to view the movie. The high volume would definitely be disturbing for the child but more importantly, the child is not habituated to remain in the dark for a prolonged duration and so she might start crying and it might be hard to manage the child in the hall. You would have to keep this in consideration before you decide to take the child along.

There is no definite age from when you can take the child along. However, the child should be sane enough to understand that she is in a hall and that a cinema is being played. Usually such a sense and sensibility can be observed between 3 to 5 years of age.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
