What Causes Watery Stool After Taking Magnesium Citrate?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: Here is a short version of my scenario. I've had fairly thin stools over the last couple days and today a fairly thick but small stool. I got worried that I was constipated and tried Fleet enama twice. Both times only liquid came out. I went to the ER, they checked me for impaction and said they don't see any. They told me to take Magnisium Citrate and 3 hours after I did I have very watery stool. I can't tell if it's just the liquid passing around the stool or did the medication actually turn my stool to liquid. The liquid is color of a stool

It is a normal effect of the magnesium Citrate to cause watery stool. Since the liquid has the color of the stool than it means that the medication has turned the stools to watery stools.
Magnesium Citrate is a saline laxative that is thought to work by increasing fluid in the small intestine. It reaches the effects between 30 minutes to 3 hours after use.
So your symptoms are typical after Magnesium Citrate use.
This is why in clinical practice we use it to clean the bowel before colonoscopy or surgery.
