What Causes Weakness After Having Xanax?

Question: I have taken Dilantin for many years with no problems. My doctor has just prescribed Xanax and I have taken two pills and am feeling lousy. Nervous, weak, etc. I want to know how these two meds interact.

Xanax (alprazolam) is a nervous system depressant.
Dilantin is known to decrease the blood levels of xanax by inducing liver enzymes.
So, a higher dose of xanax may be needed with dilantin to attain therapeutic effects.

But, as both can cause dizziness, confusion, slurred speech and sedation, there side effects can be additive in some individuals.

The combination has no life threatening interaction but has to be monitored due additive side effects.
