Question: At 72 years of age, when I bend over, when I lift my granddaughter, when first getting out of bed, I am so tired, weak and out of breath. I have been inactive for a while, but now am walking about 15 minutes a day and have no trouble. Also, am living with daughter who has 2 dogs and 4 cats. Anything I can do to get my energy back?

Nutrition, moderate exercises and good hydration.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Inactivity causes muscle weakness and reduces stamina.

2. Improvement in energy can be done through good nutrition and adequate hydration.

3. Nutrition supplements particularly B-complex vitamins will help in improving hemoglobin levels. Also Vit C and calcium supplements, to strengthen bone will be helpful. You can start taking multivitamin supplements along with calcium, or go for health drink containing these twice daily.
Importantly, good hydration and being active. It will slowly improve. Try deep breathing exercises slowly, it will improve respiratory functions.

4. Important thing at this age, is to get treated for any infection on an immediate basis. Any infection will be debilitating and can reduce all your year strength in a matter of 2-3 days. During infections, good nutrition and hydration is important along with prescribed medications.

5. If you are taking any medications, take it regularly as advised.

6. Sleep in night should be regular. Atleast 8-9 hours in night. Afternoons, maximum of one hour. Night sleep is most important to get back all the energy lost during day. Avoid any change in sleeping schedule.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
