What Causes Weakness In Hip And Legs While Arising From A Seated Position?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Feb 2015
Question: when I stand, after sitting for a while, my legs ,from the hips down, are very weak. Walking seems to help
somewhat. Sometimes after walking a short while and sitting, the skin on the tops of my thighs is numb.
I am 85, had a heart attack 20 years ago. Am on blood thinner and blood pressure medication. Type 2 diabetes
under excellent control. I walk on a treadmill for 15 to 20 minutes a day.

Brief Answer:
Neuropathy should be evaluated/ excluded.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

In my opinion, a probable cause of your symptoms may be peripheral neuropathy related to nerve damage from Diabetes.

Another cause may be hypotension (mentioned by your Cardiologost) and this possibility is supported by improvement after physical activity, but this can be said after neuropathy is excluded and evaluation of blood pressure values.

I suggest you to discuss with your treating Doctor the possibility of evaluating peripheral neuropathy and a nerve conduction study (EMG).

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
