What Causes Weird Sensations Near The Rib Cage?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 Jun 2017
Question: Yesterday night, while sleeping, I noticed that it felt like my liver was moving around. I thought it was gas.. It feels like when you have a baby inside of your uterus, but then I thought it could
be gas. I feel no pain. But it continues and it is annoying. It is like under my right rib cage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I've heard people report this type of sensation in the area of the liver (upper right quadrant of the abdomen under the rib cage), but the liver is fastened down with connective tissue and also doesn't have muscles in it like the intestines do or the diaphragm does. So it doesn't move on it's own. Most likely this was your intestines moving, perhaps with movement of air or food in them.

If you continue to have this and it is annoying, consider taking simethicone (such as GasX) and see if that makes a difference. Simethicone breaks up gas pockets into smaller units which don't cause so much trouble.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.

I do, however have a hernia where they took my gall bladder out. I have had this since 1989. It looks kind of swollen. And that is where more or less I have this unusual movement. It goes and comes.

Thoughts on this

Detailed Answer:
It you have a herniation under your liver, then that could explain the kicking sensation. Because you may be feeling the pressure changes from your intestines. If it is worse than you have had before, perhaps the weakened (hernia) area may have gotten larger. It might be best to go in to see your doctor and have an exam of the area. He/she can listen to your abdomen there and see if they hear bowel sounds. And ultrasound might be able to show the size of the defect and location of the intestines to it also.
