Question : Hello,
My 7 year old son just passed a white stool. I am terribly concerned, and since it is the weekend I have to wait till Monday to take him in. What can this be? I have never seen a white stool before. He has had a cold, with congestion and a mild cough, but nothing else. He does not appear to be yellow or jaundiced.

Brief Answer:
Dimetapp side effect..stop giving it to him...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

1. May I know if your son has passed the stool more frequently during these days?
2. White stool is related to frequent bowel movements or liver issues.
3. Stop taking Dimetapp. Some patients have reported pale/white stool while taking Dimetapp (indicative for liver damage).
4. If he will have another white stool by today, send him to ER.
5. When you send him to pediatrician, get him a complete blood count done together with liver/kidney function test; abdominal ultrasound; urine analysis.

Wish fast recovery!

Liver damage???

Should I take him to the ER now? If he has liver damage will it heal on it own?

His dr. suggested he take dimetapp and he has been on it for a little more than two weeks.

Brief Answer:
Can go now, take stool sample with you...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Dimetapp (as for any other drug) is getting metabolized in the liver. Thus, liver is being put under stress to metabolize this drug for such long time.

If he is not having frequent bowel movements, then, white stool is a side effect of Dimetapp.

You can go to ER now and take a sample of his stool with you for immediate evaluations.

If Dimetapp will be confirmed that is a cause to white stool, once it is stopped, liver will go back to its normality on its own.

The rule is to eliminate everything that might cause liver issues.

Wish fast recovery!
