What Causes Wrist Pain?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Question: Hello Doctor,

My profession is to work in front of computers everyday.

I used have pains near my wrist and forearms very often for past 5 years and i observe this pain mainly due to improper handling of computer mouse. Hence i used to keep swapping between hands to hold the mouse. But this helps only a little.

Now I am having pain in between the right arm and shoulder joint for past 3-4 months. I feel this pain when i rotate the hand backwards or move my hand in different direction.

After consulting the Doctor (details of which are specified in the solutions tried section below), So far the shoulder joint pain has reduced by 20% than before but does not heal beyond that.
Wrist keeps paining more and more as and when i use computer and my hand is not rested.

1) Whether the majors taken by me are correct or not?
2) Is there anything i need to do additionally to get the root cause for these pains?
3) Is there a way i can get permanent relief from these pains?

Kindly advice.

Brief Answer:
you need to correct your ergonomic/posture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

In computer professionals, wrist pain can be due to nerve compression called carpal tunnel along with tennis elbow.

The measures you have taken are correct but incomplete.
Most important thing is you need to correct your ergonomic/posture while working on computer. You need to add exercises to avoid muscle and nerve fatigue due to prolonged sitting.
Use of machine like IFT and ultrasound can reduce your wrist and shoulder pain; you can ask your physiotherapist for therapy.

Use ice packs to reduce inflammation.
For early healing you can take Tab celin [vit C] and antioxidant with anti-inflammatory.
If required after clinical examination you may need MRI cervical spine or shoulder.

Some lifestyle modifications to prevent pain– Take break every 40 min from computer and do some cervical rotation, shoulder shrugging stretches, walk and get back to work. Sit with taking support to your back,
I will advise to check your vit B12 and vit D3 level.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX

Thanks you so much for your quick response.

I will surely start doing exercises and life style changes as recommended by you.

However, it would really help if you could please specify the ergonomics correction that i should follow. How do you think about the usage of ergonomically designed mouse, keyboard, chair etc.? If so, would you recommend any specific brand/model that that might help in this situation?

Brief Answer:
You need to understand ergonomic

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

While sitting in chair your spine should be erect straight[not bend or curved]
Your neck should be straight, chin tucked in.
Your hip and knee should be at 90 degree flexion, foot should not be hanging.
Key board and mouse should be at hand level with shoulders relaxed elbow flexed 90 and forearm resting.

Ergonomic depends on individual body build brand may not matter much.
You have to set your sitting arrangement as per your body build.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care

Thank you once again Doctor.

Really informative. Let me take the exercises as top priority and practice these from now on.

I do not feel any swelling over the pain area as of now.
In that case, do i have to still take Tab celin [vit C] and antioxidant with anti-inflammatory? If so, how long should i continue these tabs?

Additionally, I have started developing back pain for past one month which is felt while in sitting position, however i have not consulted any doctor for the same. I have not had any issues related to spine in the past neither there were any injury in that area. Assuming it could be a muscle spasm, few days back i have started doing "Yoga" as suggested by Baba Ramdev's video on spines. As a result getting some relief.
Regarding Back Pain i have few queries:
1) Would it be safe to apply hot bag in the back pain area?
2) Any tablets to temporarily/permanently healing the pain.
3)Any other recommendation for back pain case?
