What Causes Writing Difficulties While On Vyvanse?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Sep 2015
Question: I have been diagnosed with ADHD and was taking vyvance for it with great results. I'm having difficulty these days and struggling with writing papers to complete my Master's program. I've recently moved and I'm in between jobs so I won't have health insurance for another 3 months. Is there a way to have a prescription for this medication? Also, I've heard it is expensive and wondering if there is a generic or would adderall be a less expensive alternative.

Brief Answer:
What's not expensive when talking BRAND NAMES?

Detailed Answer:
Good evening young lady. Sorry you're having difficulties as you've described. And I totally agree that the cost of any of these medications is prohibitively expensive for just about anyone. The only thing that's not terribly expensive these days I suppose is aspirin and tap water....you can't even get bread served anymore at restaurants unless you ask for it...and even then, you may end up with a charge!

I don't know direct costs of one drug over another but I can tell you that any brand name drug for just about any type of psychiatric condition and especially ADHD which tends to occur in school age children or those who are young enough to be in the work force can be very very costly...why? It's all about supply and demand and if you're in a Master's Program...and if it has anything to do with business or finance then, you can explain better to me than I can.

Having said that Vyvance is a much newer drug compared to Adderall so PERHAPS, the Adderall would be slightly LESS EXPENSIVE just for that fact? But that's just a shot in the dark on my part....

This telemedicine network does not have a prescription writing function associated with its consults. Physicians are able to do limited diagnoses and make recommendations based upon information which patients can UPLOAD such as photos, reports, etc. but we cannot order tests, medications, or other ancillary services such as PT/OT, and so on.

I will give you this little nugget of information though. If you are a full time student and without insurance coverage you should check the official websites of Shire Pharmaceuticals who is the maker of Vyvance and Adderall. There may be what they call a COMPASSIONATE PRESCRIPTION PROGRAM whereby if you have a doctor's prescription for a particular medication because of medical necessity but cannot afford it there are channels through which you can apply to get it at either very LOW or even NO cost. But you do have to have the prescription in hand and it can't have expired.

Now, one more thing I'll share with you before we end this conversation....did you know that Shire pharmaceuticals has been ordered to pay $56.5 million to settle lawsuits that the company vastly overexaggerated claims of effectiveness of these drugs. That story broke Sept. 26, 2014.

There are more modern techniques of treating ADHD now using a technique called COGNITIVE BEHAViORAL THERAPY.....medications are typically not used...and a certain % of patients have good relief of their symptoms using CBT.

At any rate, if you are still certain that either of these 2 medications are clearly to your benefit and that you need it to function well then, you should check out the website for SHIRE PHARMACEUTICALS and find out if they have a COMPASSIONATE DRUG PROGRAM set up for those without insurance and in need of medications for medically necessary purpose.

I hope these answers satisfactorily addresses your question. If so, may I ask your favor of a HIGH STAR RATING with some written feedback?

Also, if there are no other questions or comments, may I ask you CLOSE THE QUERY on your end so this question can be transacted and archived for further reference by colleagues as necessary?
