What Causes Yeast Smelling Burps In Children?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Dec 2014
Question: Hi there. I will ask if you would like but we are broke. Both of my children occasionally (my nine year old just did it though) have stomach issues where they have a long period of burping and it smells yeasty. My nine year old was doing that all morning and just puked and the smell was very strong. I'm wondering if it's from eating too many yeasty foods or if it is possibly something else. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Could be GER or due to normal intestinal flora

Detailed Answer:
Hi....it could either be a GER - gastroesophageal reflux or a normal phenomenon occurring due to gut flora. Gut flora are normal intestinal bacteria which dwell in a particular individual and these are commensals. They do good by maintaining normal ecobiology in our gut. They are prevent harmful bacteria and fungus from infecting the gut.

The smell of belching or burping or flatus is commonly due to this bacteria which are particular to each individual.

If both your kids are growing well and are on par with their peers in growth and development and if this smell is not bothering them in any way, you need not worry.

Please do not use antacids and other over the counter medications without proper indication like severe stomach burning sensation or burning pain in chest after a spicy meal.

Regarding the Gerd, my 15 year old swears he gets this symptom more often when he is on his gerd medicine that the doctor prescribed for him which makes me wonder if they have not enough acid in their bellies?

Brief Answer:
May be true

Detailed Answer:
Hi...what you say may be true. The most commonly prescribed GER medicine is a proton pump inhibitor class of medicine, which lowers the gastric acid secretion in the stomach and sometimes to negligible amounts.

When there's no acid in the stomach, the bacteria in food which should have been neutralized by the normally present acid, pass down into intestine and can cause these sort of symptoms.

This the reason why I said, when the symptoms and signs are not hampering the kids' growth and development, please do not use any medicines in this regard.

What about gas medicine when they are belching the smell a lot? Also, does it sound like they are eating too many yeasty foods maybe?

Brief Answer:
No need for gas medicine/ could be food related

Detailed Answer:
Hi...coming to your queries directly -
1. Do not use any gas medicines or Carminatives.
2. Yes, the diet they consume might have a relation to this type of smell. It could be because of too much yeasty foods in their diet too.
