Clubbing is a sign of an underlying medical condition most commonly seen in chronic heart and lung diseases.

Clubbing of nails is seen in the following conditions:

Congenital heart diseases which present with cyanosis since birth.

1.Congenital acyanotic heart diseases in which the shunt reverses leading to
cyanosis as the age increases.

2.Chronic lung infections like bronchiectasis,cystic fibrosis, lung abscess, and
lung cancers and empyema.

3.Pleural mesothelioma.

4.Infective endocarditis which is an infection of inner layer of heart which
usually occur in patients with an underlying heart defect.

5.Other lung conditions such as tuberculosis and interstitial lung disease.

6.The other causes for clubbing are :

Celiac disease

Liver disorders such as cirrhosis of the liver and chronic liver diseases.

Graves' disease

Hyperthyroidism

Cancers of gastrointestinal tract, liver, and Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

The symptoms and signs of concerning are:

Breathing difficulty

Blood in the sputum

Prolonged fever

Cough

Chest pain

Shortness of breath

Altered bowel habits

Abdominal pain or distention

Loss of weight

Jaundice

Loss of appetite

Bleeding per rectum

Bluish discoloration of lips and fingers

The complete review of complaints has to be done by a physician with family and medical history followed by a thorough physical examination to detect the underlying cause for the clubbing.
