Question : I am 69 and went thru menopause in my 40's, and had very few hot
flashes. Now I am deluged with what seem to be them.Is that
possible or could it be something else? There have been many
stressful things happening. This has been going on for about 3
months (heat) and getting worse.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be menopausal hot flashes.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The hot flashes that you are having now are related to menopause. These can happen late and are specially aggravated with stress.

Bring in some lifestyle changes:
1) Eat a healthy nutritious balanced diet which should include fresh fruits and Green leafy vegetables.
2) Avoid high-calorie foods and saturated fats.
3) Exercise regularly for an hour and brisk walk for 30 to 40 minutes daily and maintain a healthy weight
4) Avoid smoking and alcohol (if at all do)
5) Avoid stress, practice relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation
6) make sleep a priority and sleep for a minimum of 8 hours daily
7) Dress in layers and avoid hot beverages warm rooms, caffeine, spicy foods, to avoid hot flashes

If the symptoms are severe then you may need SSRI's or SNRI group of drugs that modulate the estrogen receptors and prevent hot flashes. They need the prescription and you may discuss their use and side effects with your doctor before using as they ultimately modulate the hormones. Most cause severe nausea and decrease libido.

I hope this answers your query. In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out. Wishing you good health.
